FOREST ROW PROFILE

Forest Row, some three miles south of East Grinstead and on the edge of Ashdown Forest, has grown from a small hamlet to a thriving village over the last one hundred and fifty years or so.  The village has retained much of its rural character, and is a pleasant mixture of old and new, with traditional Sussex cottages and pleasing modern developments. There are several village greens carefully preserved and maintained by the Parish Council  giving an attractive open appearance.

Forest Row is also a thriving business area and virtually every trade and profession is represented amongst the small shops and businesses that still provide a personal service. A small number of light industrial units have been built and these have helped to create a balanced community without intruding on the basic character of the village.  A Business Forum was originally created in 1996, and after several changes of format still survives today, to represent and promote the interests of this wide ranging business community.

The village provides many traditional leisure and service activities, including a monthly market and an annual music festival, but has also embraced more recent innovations, with a re-use/recycling shop, a community fridge and a monthly repair café.

Forest Row Parish Council is responsible for allotments, the cemetery, upkeep of the village greens and open spaces, and much of the street furniture.  It also runs a community café and a thriving youth service. It comments on planning applications, and has representatives on many local organisations.

The office in the Community Centre is open from 9:00am to 4:00 pm Mondays to Fridays.
